Re-imagining Landscapes
Can Purtell is a small scale production of locally grown organic hay and grains
Healthy soils produce healthy plants.
FORAGE: The project aims to establish diverse species of perennial and annual forage crops that are climate adapted, regenerate soils and provide optimum livestock nutrition. It is growing dry forage for working horses, cattle and sheep on the island of Eivissa.
In a warm dry climate where 4 months of the year are drought conditions, livestock depend on good quality dry forage to see them through the summer months in optimum health and condition.
Plants and herbs that have beneficial anthelmintic properties are selected for healthy parasite free animals.
WHEAT: We grow heritage and local variety wheat using regenerative practices to produce flour for direct sales to local bakers and chefs in Eivissa.
Can Purtell uses local varieties from the Balearics but also ancient and heritage wheats from mainland Spain and countries further South. The wheat is milled in Formentera at Cooperativa de Camp de Formentera for high quality organic flour available in different grades (wholemeal, semi and white flours)
Can Purtell miltiplies rare local variety wheats to recover their use. It is also developing population wheats for increased resilience to climate, pests and disease. And experimenting with intercropping and companion cropping to create a crop that is supported with it’s nutrient needs during its growing and ressulting in a more nutritious grain as a result.
Healthy plants produce healthy animals
Can Purtell uses wild cultivars and local varieties to improve drought resistance and work with the existing biome.
By increasing the number of plant species and having several varieties of the same species resilience to drought and disease is improved.
The more biodiversity above the ground, the more biodiversity there is below ground.
By looking at what is already growing successfully in the wild as a starting point, Can Purtell mimics Nature’s selections and follows her lead.
B is for Biome and Biodiversity…Bacteria, Bees, Beetles, Butterflys and Birds
Compacted and depleted soils are restored and regenerated using beneficial plant mixes, companion planting and biofertilizer treatments. Herbal leys and annual diverse forage crops are used in rotation with heritage wheats. Wheat is planted with mixes of meadow plants and legumes creating an understory that increases plant health, nutrient cycling below ground, soil health, water absorbtion, soil cover and ecosystem benefits within the wheat fields.
Harvesting seeds for Adaptation, Resilience & Seed Sovereignty
Can Purtell saves seeds year on year to increase their resilience and adaptation to the local climate and soil biome. Local Variety grains are multiplied and also distributed and exchanged with other local farmers to ensure their survival between multiple growers and their increase in use.
Never buy seeds twice!
Can Purtell recovers abandoned arable farmland and puts it back into production regenerating the soil and restoring biodiversity to the fields.
50 hectares of extensive rain fed farm land in 5 years will be returned to production 2021-2025.
