Ecological Restoration of Farmland
Can Purtell is a patchwork farm in Sant Llorenc de Balafia made up of fields that have fallen into disuse. The farm produces dry forage for livestock and heritage and local variety wheats which it mills for local bakers and restaurants.
Can Purtell puts fields back into production in a nature friendly, biodiverse farming system which improves soil and ecosystem health.
It can take 2-3 years to regenerate soil health in preparation for planting wheat so Can Purtell relies on investment to take on new fields.
This support ensures that good quality organic seeds can be bought and the maximum diversity of seeds can be planted to bring soils back to life.
Can Purtell is an experimental farm and is constantly trialing new practices and machinary for climate adapted regenerative farming.
By sponsoring a hectare of disused farmland the land can be restored as working farmland under agro-ecological stewardship using regenerative principles and practices and providing habitat and food for local fauna to thrive.
The average person in Europe emits 5-7 Tonnes of carbon a year equivalent to a 0.5% increase in Organic Matter per hectare.
Can Purtell is providing a tangible way to put the carbon you have emitted using fossil fuel realted products during the year back into the soil where it came from.
You are welcome to visit anytime you like to say hello and see how the fields are coming along. There are regular opportunities to join in on farm activities also and giveaways from Can Purtell’s community of restaurants and bakers.
Can Purtell is a community supported Farmland Ecosystem Restoration project made of many hectares and many people working together towards a thriving and healthy farm ecosystem.
